history: Wiki entry.

personality:

"What a prick."

A sizeable percentage of people who know Nathan will say that about him at some point or another, because that's exactly what he is. He's a prick, a dickhead, a bastard - whatever term you want to use, it describes him perfectly. Abrasive, self-centred, morally ambiguous, Nathan lacks anything resembling a brain to mouth filter and will say exactly what he thinks - and it's usually not flattering to anyone.

While you could say he lives by the creed of, 'do unto others as you would have done to yourself', it doesn't exactly work because Nathan himself is so utterly thick skinned the same kind of insults roll off him - and in his self-centredness, he assumes the same is true of everyone. No one is affected by what he does - because he wouldn't be. This gets him into a hell of a lot of trouble - including landing him an ASBO and a community service order, making most of his 'friends' dislike him and getting him kicked out of his mother's house.

This is where his powers come in - like all of the other people to receive powers, his is connected to his personality: nothing affects him, nothing hurts him (he may claim it does, but in truth it all rolls off him and he bounces straight back) - and so that carries over into the physical where he actually bounces straight back from death itself. The fact that he also sees ghosts and can't tell the difference between the dead and the living is a pretty good reflection of his complete obliviousness to other people and what's going on with them.

HOWEVER, there are exceptions to these things! He's not a complete prick all the time, honest. He does genuinely like his friends and he will put himself out there for them even while being a complete dick to them. Despite the fact that

-parents
-brother
-powers and personality - immortality to letting nothing hurt him; seeing the dead as the living to obliviousness to others

abilities/powers:

Nathan is immortal. He's capable of dying, it's true - presumably, after the first time he died, he was dead right through the autopsy and the burial process. However, when he is dead, his body will then regenerate itself and he will return to life some time later. (Subsequent deaths after that first one have taken far less time to reverse)

His power only works when he is dead - reducing him to a near-death state will incapacitate him in exactly the same way as any other person.

Connected to this power, Nathan can also see ghosts - but he can't tell them apart from the living; they actually have to tell him they're dead or other people have to point out that they actually can't. (It was originally implied that this was only while on drugs, but he saw another one perfectly sober, so apparently it's just a thing he does.) This will have precisely zero effect on his time in Abax, however.
